Nice for us younger OO fans to have the new BBC album - I can finally give up searching for second hand copies of the Peel sessions LP, though 'Oh No' is that rarest of things - a rubbish early OO tune!

Equally enticing are the sleeve notes complete with John Perry interview. Anyone out there prepared to speculate (or even reliably inform) as to the source of PP's "independent means" which allowed for the recording of the first LP at the bands own pace?

There's also some interesting stuff about disputed song-writing credits, but it's nice to read JP and PP still meet up "fairly regularly", and remain on good terms. No allusion as to PP's current frame of mind/situation though.

We currently seem to be in one of those occaisional purple patches for the musical class of 76-80, what with Wire and The Soft Boys resurfacing to fabulous effect on recent albums. I even saw The Fall give great gig this week. I trust our Peter is set to miss the boat ...... again.

Is the album out yet?
Saw a picture on a web site of the cover - why have they chosen the same picture as the Remains album?
As the new album is just the previous two BBC albums released as one album then there must be some point to them doing this. What is it?

Hi.nice to see the site..I loved the Only ones but only ever got to see em play once in some polytech in London in autumn 78..the UK subs were supporting them..they were great live! I saw Perrett with Thunders st the Lyceum in Oct that year two and he's on a few Thunders bootlegs..whoever said Crawfish wasn't worth searching out is deaf dumb and probably blind as well..way i heard it John perry played lots of stuff on that Lp cos of JT's usual problems..I think he also turned up on some dumb punk 12" with captain sensible in the early 80's..a guy I knew here years back once managed perret (Adrian maddox)and natch I've known Nina for yonks..the reason i'm writing is cos the Flaming Youht Lp did exist..I had it years back..it was a 12"Lp and the cover was just a photocopied band picture..i think the Lp had a white label..it was released in the mid 80's? I think the 45 with the alternate sleeve was on promo only copies..again I had a copy which cost me 10p in good Vibes here..but again I sold it years back..didn't perret get up and play with therapy? too?..I remember them always mentioning being perret fans..anyways just wanted to congratulate ya on your site..i'm sure there are more recordings with Thunders...I'll have to trawl through my old tapes if I get the time!..gotta go best wishes

Another Girl Another Planet. One of the finest records of all time . I first heard it when I was a Punk at school and it molded my musical taste to what it is today.
Just add this tune to any TV screen play and it also becomes a classic.

I did some work on those guitars. The white Strat was 1962 & the modifications did precisely -nothing-. The black switches (which I disconnected) were quite a common 60's solution from the days before 5-way pickup selectors. So the strat was stock.

The Les Paul was a 1955 Jnr, converted into a Special.
TWO humbuckers replacing the P90. P90's sounded great, but they whistled whenever the volume was turned up.

This may be kinda pointless, as I'm not sure how many people visit this site nowadays, but I've just been watching the 'faster than lightning' video and I've got a couple of guitar-orientated questions for John Perry fans:
1) The white strat played by John for most of the 'serpents' tracks on the video has a bunch of modifications, not least the addition of 2 switches under the neck and bridge pickups. Does anyone have any idea exactly what these do or what year his strat is (I'd guess early 70s).
2) The cool sounding (but cheap looking) sunburst-y Les Paul special (I guess) played by John Perry for the other songs on Serpents is excellent and I need to buy one. Anyone got more details on this guitar?

I've recently discovered this site: very impressive! And an awesome History...
But before these Only Ones...in 1966 my brother
(Jim Axberg) and I started a band THE ONLY ONES and recorded "Another Place" and "Can't Trust a Woman" in Tyler, Texas, USA.
We've been getting calls from all over Europe about reissuing them on some comps. I have a comp from Holland
"THE LOST GENERATION VOL #3" - that "Can't Trust a Woman" is on, with 18 other "60's US bands,

Martin Lawson writes in his excellent discography listing that a video exists of the Only Ones at Dingwalls Dec 1981. Indeed it does, I shot & produced it and own the 3/4" masters (which as of writing in 2002 have been digitally dubbed for safekeping and are just fine). John Perry and Peter were each given a VHS copy some years back. There were plans to put it out but these came to nought. I myself have never seen a bootleg around..... Its good, really good - despite what John says...a great band.

Dingwalls, Camden, London 18/12/80

Programme / Why Don't You Kill Yourself? / In Betweens / Trouble In The World / The Guest / Another Girl, Another Planet / The Happy Pilgrim / Lovers Of Today / Me And My Shadow / City Of Fun / The Beast / Language Problem / No Solution / Miles From Nowhere / Peter And The Pets

Notes: A video of one of the last Only One’s gigs at Dingwalls, London just before Christmas 1980 exists and there are rumours of it being available on bootleg video. Mention has also been made of releasing it officially.

John Perry: "Dingwalls, as I recall, came after a [relatively] long layoff. Not that we ever hung out together much between tours anyway, but the intervening months in this case were different. We’d split up. The reasons for this gig happening at all were moot. As far as I was concerned apart from a [general] enjoyment of playing, there was no reason whatsoever to be there."

When asked about the performance that night he replied: "All shows were as ‘jammed’ as this one is. It’s just the joins show here ‘cos the rust is creeping in. Too long away from the front."

Never the less, it still has some great moments and is an interesting souvenir of a complete Only Ones gig.

Hi Peter,
I remember going to a couple of your gigs with the only ones in edinburgh and i met with you backstage.. at the Astoria. one of the gigs had an interesting support, i remember pogo ing to one of their songs then realised it was a velvet underground song.. chelsea girls I thinK?.. the band turned out to be simple minds. I also recall you rolled up a joint from a piece of dope in your sock. It was a silver ort gold sparkling sock.(Now how's that for detail...some people remember dates. I said that i thought your voice was amazing.. amixture between lou reed , Syd barrett and marc bolan.. and you said that you just wanted to be Keith Richards!!
i read your biography recently and hope tha you have found some more happiness.. your music has been very important to me, especially during my late teens.. i still hold a flaming torch for you and the guys,, good luck... Mike.

My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent! none.

I had the great privilege to see Paul Westerberg in New York City a couple of weeks ago. He was doing in-store shows and signings. I yelled out "Where's Peter Perrett" during the show and he played "Another Girl, Another Planet". I brought my Peter Perrett book for him to sign, and he actually flipped through the pages and signed a great rock n roll picture of Peter. Paul said to me " I wonder how the old guy is doing," and I said "thats what i wanted to ask you." He had no answer for me, though he did talk about John Perry alittle bit. All in all it was a great show, and Peter if you read this, Paul is going to tour this summer for the first time in like 6 years, i'm sure he wouldn't mind if you went along.

The wit, the irony, the empathy, the music.
Do you think PP reads this site?
There is music i always fall back on - reliable, safe, me.
There are artists i just can't fault and although I love
VU reed Jcale JJcale bowie etc.. there have only been two truly reliable artists - Rsmith(cure) and PP(OO+TO).
they touch, they know.
And when in doubt PP hits the mark.
PP stopped me from dying.
PP helped me be sad when I needed to be.
PP lifted me from the doledrums when I thought I was going down.
PP made me laugh.
PP made me laugh at myself.
PP helped me to see the limits.
PP was there when no body else was there.
PP let me know that it was ok to take drugs.
PP let me know it was better not to take drugs.
PP let me know you've got to pay and pay and pay.

Me encantan de Only Ones!

I WAS A BIT TO YOUNG TO SEE THE ONLY ONES LIVE, BUT LISTENING TO THE CD BROUGHT BACK GOOD MEMORIES OF WHEN I MANAGED TO SEE THE ONE AT THE DUTCHESS OF YORK, LEEDS LATE 94. SAME SET I SEEM TO RECALL. I ALSO SAW THE ONE AT READING BUT I CANT REMEMBER IF IT WAS 95 OR 96. ALL MY MATES THOUGHT IT WAS A FANTASTIC SHOW EVEN THOUGH THEY ONLY KNEW THE FIRST SONG (ANOTHER GIRL) THE REST WERE OF THE NEW ONE ALBUM (WOKE UP STICKY) NEEDLESS TO SAY A COUPLE OF THEM WENT OUT & BOUGHT SOME ONLYONES/THE ONE ALBUMS. I never listen to your music anymore but don't need to, as I can recall most of the songs from memory even 20 years later; besides my kids prefer reggae!
Actually, one night in '83 I smashed the records - so obsessed had I become over them; it wasn't just the lyrics which became satanic in their power over me, but the bass, Perry's perfect solo's, Perrets drooling voice and the backing harmonics - mix that with a little hashish and you can dream - or more accurately nightmare - forever...

Whatever, each listening seemed to reveal something else - and very, very few musicians ever achieve that with their audience... congratulations - who cares what the plebians liked, we know as ex-OO fans the heights to which great music can get...

Hi Peter,
Hope you and your family had a good Xmas and that the New Year will be kind to you. Seems like a long time since I was as an unscheduled vistor at your house when I was working for The Man.... It was great see you all again in less stressfull circumstances at Nina's book launch, but that all seems a long time ago now....
I gave up the old job two years ago, but still dabble by running a drugs consultancy specialising in preparing expert evidence for the defence! Hasn't made me over popular with some of my old colleagues, but that's their problem, not mine.
However, my main job is running my own music promotions company, Barking Spider Promotions. I co-ordinated the Country Joe McDonald (of The Fish) U.K. tour last year, climaxing with a wonderful sell out gig at The Borderline Club in London, where I played with Joe - a dream come true! I've also booked a lot of good acts like Canned Heat, Dr. Feelgood, Gene Parsons from The Byrds, Steve Forbert, Fairport Convention, and some great blues players, including a lot of visiting Americans. Still can't get Bob Dylan to play for me though! (What do you think of "Love & Theft"? Awesome!!!)So - if you get it together to play live again in the future, drop me a line in cyberspace, I'd love the opportunity to sort out a gig for you - just for the sheer pleasure of seeing you play again.
Take Care!
John Roberts.

Hi fellow Perrett fans!
I've been trading music on the internet for some years, and finally I got hold of some interesting Only Ones/Perrett stuff. One item is a bunch of rehearsals from about 1975, with early versions of many OO tracks, including a song I'd never heard before, "I'm Yours". ALso a hot gig from Liverpool '79 and Perrett radio shows from '96. What I'm looking for now is a copy of the live album from Mean Fiddler, "Hearts on Fire". If anyone has that album, plaese get in touch :)

Great to see so much interest. How about some news kid? Please let us know what the Perrett boys are up too. There were rumours about a band? Is there one? What are they called? My brother - ex member of a band called the Perfectors- anyone heard of them? Now lives in France and plays in an expat band called XL5. he wanted to cover an Only Ones song and strangely one of the others suggested it before him. So the French get to hear a version of...you guessed it AGAP now and again. Do us all a big favour Jamie give us a message, even if it"s to let us know you are all OK. Ps I would love to hear from other fans....

I have to confess that i never heard of the Only Ones until this year, one week ago. I was introduced to them by a book called SMACK, by Melvin Burgess. The book is about two teenage kids who fall into heroin addiction and try to climb out. But the more awesome thing about the book was that at the beginning of every chapter there were snippets of song lyrics and around three of these snippets came from songs by The Only Ones. So, curious little thing that i am, i downloaded the songs.....I LOVE THEM! They're so cool and different from all the garbage you hear on the radio. I strongly recommend you all read this book, as a way to relive the 80's and these awesome songs!

one night in 1980, i went to a record store called 'peaches' with it in mind to find something english and 'punk/new wave'-- i came across the 'special view' album and bought it, having never heard of the only ones at all. i think i also bought a specials album that night. both very memorable. i played the OO's constantly for a while, then the album went to the back of the rotation, then came to seem hopelessly dated, and i stopped playing, but the melodies to 'another girl...', 'lovers of today' and 'out there in the night' got hardwired into my mind, and have stayed there ever since. everything i knew about the band came from that one album, it's cover, and the photo.

fast forward 20 years--i resurrect my old Technics turntable, and go to the garage to excavate lp's to play, and come across the OO's album 'special view' ...holy shit! i thought i'd lost it years ago! and it is still a sound document that captures a time and feeling and an atmosphere like nothing else. the tunes are still great, and i've had a great time listening again. like entering a time tunnel, and finding that it is still wonderful back there. so then i had to get on the web and search for the OO's and found this.

i am willing to bet that there is not another soul in dallas texas who has ever heard of them, but this one has.

Isn't it a shame that more people haven't taken the time to look up The Only Ones, they really do stand up on their own both musically and lyrically within all the late 70's bands.

Take care people.

Don't forget, the OO were not a one-song band. Admittedly, Another Girl, Another Planet is excellent, but so too was Lovers of Today -- a song that had eerie echoes of my relationship a few years back.

I've just bought That Was Only Yesterday, An Introduction to Spooky Tooth, one of THE most underated groups of the late 60s/early 70s (I was one of the few Spooky fans at that time). The drummer was a certain Mike Kellie (and he even co-wrote one of the tracks on the Spooky CD. Buy it -- I got mine the other day for £6.99 in HMV (I couldn't afford to buy records in the 60s: too young; too poor).

I'm looking forward to reading more about the early days. I've got Peter's autobiography, but it's interesting to hear other peoples perspectives too.
I'd also be interested in knowing the stories behind the songs.

I was introduced to The Only Ones via one extremely worn cassette copy of Baby's Got A Gun. It was around 1983 and I was in my very early teens. Soon after, I was disappointed to find out from a friend that the band did not exist anymore. I collected all the records and introduced many of my friends to them. I have been writing and performing in rock bands since my mid-teens. A couple of them have covered OO's tunes. My point is this: Peter Perrett and The Only Ones were a great inspiration to me when I was trying to gain the courage to start my own band. So, Thanks alot. PS. What are the Perrett kids up to , musically, nowadays? Anything? Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the FasterThanLightening video?

Went looking for the lyrics to "Another Girl, Another Planet" and was delighted to locate your site. I first heard the tune as a cover by The Mighty Lemon Drops on the Sire compilation "Just Say Anything" and it is one of my all time favorites! I heard the tune being used in a movie my wife rented (For some reason I think it was "Kiss Me Guido" - but that is probably not right). I thought the version the movie was a cover of a MLD song - - but I checked the credits at the end of the film and then tracked down Special View. I am now discovering that other bands (the Replacements for example) have done covers of "Another Girl...". I am bound and determined to track down every version there is!

Desperately sad to hear the Perrett family are in financial difficulties. Someone so gifted should be living off the fruits of his genius. In our family, the OOs have jumped a generation: all my CDs disappeared into my daughter's room.

The world is waiting to rediscover you Peter. John Lee Hooker only hit paydirt in his 60s! Desperate to see you again in concert: even better if with John Perry! And if you do: come North: Leeds awaits you.

Best Wishes

Hi!
I've been a Only Ones/Peter Perrett fan for about 10 years.
Don't know too many fellow fans here in Sweden, but for me
the music has meant a lot! Peter wrote/writes such beautiful and intelligent lyrics and wonderful melodies. And John Perry's guitar playing always gets me very emotional...
SO Peter, get up and create some music!! The world needs it.
It's horrible with all these boy bands and fake artists.
"Woke Up Sticky" was great, especially considering the long layoff.
If I was someone like Bruce Springsteen or another major star I'd record a cover album of Peter's songs to make him financially secure!!
Rock on

Peter, Wasnt a friend of yours in the seventies but got into you in the late eighties via being a big Johnny Thunders fan. Into the Nineties and you are still a huge influence and having been in bands for many years I am just about getting as good as John Perry. Just bought Remains on CD after sellin the vinyl version years ago. Love the extra tracks on it. Never bought Woke Up Sticky when it came out but now would love a copy after hearing the live album but cant get hold of a copy anywhere as its been deleted. Some of the One stuff was the best stuff youve ever done, especially 'Shivers' and 'Shame of Being You'
For gods sake Peter come out of the woodwork and record some more material the music world still needs that voice and lyrics, theres nothing else come close to it.
Best Wishes to you and your sons - please give dad a kick and get him recording.

Jamie, Very sorry to hear about your finances!
I saw your Dad on my 16th birthday (August 21st 1978) at Barbarellas's club in Birmingham. A show I will never forget. I had previously bought the 12 inch of 'Lovers..." on Vengeance - which I still have!!! After the Barbs' show I saw the Only Ones perhaps 6 or seven more times...including supporting Television at the Odeon in Birmingham, where I shouted for the Only Ones at Tom Verlaine and nearly got lynched! Incidentally, the other BIG Brummie Only Ones fan at the time was Nick Bates who later turned into Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran! I think he was at every show I was at! cheers.

Great to hear you are OK Jamie, but sad that you all are in financial trouble. A lot of us are in similar straits but this should not happen to Peter and Family. like many I wish we could help, and would love to see him get a little much deserved success and reward.

Peter and the Only Ones (and The One) were and still are a major force in my universe.

Our paths crossed once or twice. I e mailed recently but you may not have got it. I was pissed at the time and excited at finding your site, so apologies if you did get it and it was a bit wild.
My ex wife (and lifelong soulmate) Lucy (Her working title at the time) was a friend of Suze (and therefore John Perry) and knocked around with (forgive me this bit) Lynn Shilingford, they worked in a Japanese club together. Lynn put me up for a week at the time you were recording Baby's Got A Gun. John and Suze used to come round to Lucy's place and the girls would do knitting etc!. Lucy was into gear and I am so glad that she managed to get off eventually. Anyway we went backstage at the Lyceum pre -Baby's Got A Gun gig, and you drove us back to your house in your Jag (Daimler?). We played some guitar... You were all so nice. There were some Psychedelic Furs people there. Kelly drove us home and I happened to have his favourite brand of cigar on me. He lectured Lucy about smack. What a nice man.. You played the tapes of Baby's.. Alan Mair videod the backstage stuff . What happened to it? What with Lucy and smack etc. your songs always had a special meaning for me, and always will. We met again at a Bristol gig - The One at the Fleece and Firkin. Astounding gig, and you and Zena were as nice as ever.
Like every one else I would give anything to see you recording and gigging again. If I win the lottery you can have half mate!
To all you other readers_ The only Ones are not only the best band in the World- they are the best people too.
Peter keep it up Son and look after the family.

I came across the Remains LP (new ) in a market stall in Plymouth, around 1984 I assume. Inside was a free EP with the traks "Oh No", "Don't Hold Your Breath", "I Only Wanna Be Your Friend" and "Broken Arrows". I've not listened to it in 16 years. I later heard of John Perry living in Bristol around the mid-Eighties and advertising guitar lessons. I know he was in a band briefly after the OOs but can't remember what they were called. They had a track on a sampler LP which I remember as being awful. I saw The One in Edinburgh in 1985(?). The audience was full of aging fans virtually all of whom had dragged along wives and girlfriends to show them what they had missed, and God it was great. I'm trying to remember the name of the band that supported them at one of the Bristol gigs. I think that Koula Kakoulli might have fronted them. They were okay but I remember at the time that their name was really cool. Around 1978-80 the OOs were often interviewed for the music press, has anyone got copies of any of these interviews?

I would have stayed longer but had to get my girlfriend back home to PLymouth on the last train. Two things stands out at the Lyceum gig; the brilliant lighting and an old couple in one of the boxes to the side of the balcony that I thought must be Peter's mum and dad. I was just surfing, wondering if the Only ones had a site and lo and behold. Reading through the guest book entries brought back a lot of memories of way back when.

I first heard Another Girl at a party in 1978. I went out and bought it the next day and played it about 50 times straight.

I was living in Plymouth then which, strangely had a good music scene. I saw the band at a club called the Metro with about 14 other people. Over the next year or so I saw them at the Bristol Locarno (twice I think, its all a bit hazy), Totnes and a farewell gig at London Lyceum. I can't remeber too much about the gigs now but some bizarre moments stick in the mind. At the Totnes gig I remember the band ambling through the sizable crowd to take the stage with John Perry incongruously wearing a cricketing jumper! I got backstage at the Bristol gig and chatted to Peter and Koulla Kakoulli

Listened to the OO's a lot in late 70's/early 80's. Of the 'old music' I've got,(tapes nearing end of lifespan!) the ones worth listening to today are Beatles, Pink Floyd and Only Ones - for sheer quality; both musical & lyrical. ( Also have occasional Beach Boys periods in Summer (wassat?)Thought Peter ought to know the company he keeps in my eyes/ears. Will now get round to tracking down other stuff by him since 'Baby's got a Gun'...Luv/peace etc from another old hippy fart.

I go a whole year or even years without playing an OO record, probably because my brain carries every note!, but eventually when flicking through my collection I'll succumb. Generally its Remains that draws me back, I doubt there will ever be again a group who can create such a powerful, emotive and honest group of songs, even if they were never meant to exist as an album in the first place!

I was (and still am) a fan. Bought the first three albums when they first came out. Saw them a couple of times in Edinburgh (brilliant). Had no idea about the drug problems, just loved the music. I wrote off to join the fan club believe it or not and got a two page hand written reply about two months later. It was then I realized they weren't that popular(!).

Those albums are recording the same concert.(at Mean Fiddler,London,1994).
It is the difference that VIDEO-CR-ROM(about 10min.) is in "Hearts On Fire".
"Another Girl,Another Planet" & "No Peace For The Wicked" is in the CR-ROM.
The peformance was done in April,1999.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s in England, I recall the classic from an all night party (my own) another girl/another planet. To this day its in my top 10. I used to listen to RTE 2(Irish station) from the North of England. It was always introduced by Another Girl/Another Planet Medlay I think Pat/Dave Fanning introduced the show (I lived there for a while as well) he was from pirate station background so played all the early U2/punk etc circa 79/80 .....Though like we were in the late 70s and early 80s, maybe because I am mid 30s now, things were alot more crazy, I still go to the night clubs/bands/pubs....But when you had some Clash/Stranglers/Buzzcocks come on the whole place used to go mental...even at the college discos...

My good friend and fellow Only Ones fanatic told me about this site and I'm very excited about my discovery. Too bad Peter can't seem to keep it together for long enough to get out his material. He is one of the most unsung and under appreciated artists in the world. When drugs get a hold of you sometimes they never let you go. I've been there myself but it can be done. So if you ever read this Peter please you have too much inside you to just waste yourself and rot away before your time. Everybody loses someone they love eventually but we must not let grief and sorrow overcome our life and ruin it. You only got one go at this so for your sake and all your followers please don't give up. And to any nice Only One fans who happen to read this, if you have any Only Ones song lyrics you can send them to me I would glady make a tape of any Only Ones cd or record you may be missing from your collection. Mine is pretty complete. I don't have Cultured Palate but that's about all I don't have. Stay straight and true.......

In 1978/79 my band (The Blanks) did a few gigs with The Only Ones. When they played Peterborough the audience was quite small but the band played really well. Peter was great and Invited us to the Johny Thunders "so alone" gig in London . At which I stood on the stage and took photos. Two things always struck me about Peter and the rest of the band ,firstly they always had time for their fans. In fact they really would go out of their way to talk to people who were intrested in their music. Secondly how good a guitarist John Perry is. Has anyone got any info on anything he's doing now .....? oh Brilliant! site by the way :o)

Peter Perrett is one of the most gifted songwriters in the history of Rock and Roll.
Unfortunatly he is also very underrated. I had the privelage to make a brief encounter with
the "star" in London. I have a picture and autographed passport to prove it(AND I DIDN'T GET THE RUBBER GLOVE TREATMENT)

Just a plug for another great band who owe a debt in part to The Only Ones - THE CHURCH. If you haven't heard them then there's some good comps about but I'd recommend going for any of the following studio albums (there are 12 in total): Hologram Of Baal/Priest=Aura/Seance/Heyday/Blurred Crusade/Starfish. Great band not a million miles from the OO. I do a fanzine for them and you might want to check their website: http://church.tristesse.com

Anyone with Perrett related rarities please write to me [I'm not fully contactable on e-mail - yet! ] as I'm always on the look out for live recordings or studio rarities etc.

I've also nearly finished an extensive and extremely detailed discography including bootlegs, track listings, unreleased tracks, personnel, differences between releases, dates etc, from England's Glory to The One. [Apologies to Steve Everitt -I'm not trying to steal your thunder-I'll send you a copy, promise!] It's currently about 15 pages long so I'm happy to send out a limited number. Otherwise it may appear on the net at some point in the future.

Oh, yes, i agree - Planet is not a bad song, but, Christ, i always skip that track & prefer many more over that one. And, yes, i agree again, Perry is up there with Ronson & Verlaine in terms of guitar-godliness
BTW, any of you out there notice on 'No Solution' the Perry guitar lick that was edited out, you can JUST make out the first note....i only realised what the lick was when i heard a live version of 'Solution'.

Great site! I have been a fan since hearing Creature of Doom on the old Hope & Anchor compilation back in 1979, when I was the sole punk in my Californian high school. Never saw them live, alas, but it's true that you never get tired of their songs. But I wish other fans would stop going on about Planet. Peter's right to be sick of it - they have a dozen songs that are just as good in my opinion! I listen to OO just as much for Perry though.

Congratulations on a great site. One of the highlights of my life of musical appreciation was seeing what was billed as the OO's farewell concert in London (I think at the Lyceum Ballroom). My brothers who were with me claim that there were quite a few farewell gigs so it may not have been the last. The music of the Only Ones remains as fresh for me now as it did back then: the lyrics, PP's stunning vocal delivery and John Perry's guitar. I remain astonished that they did not become huge. Another girl is of course such a classic track: the gathering momentum of the intro sends shivers down the spine. "You get under my skin I don''t find it irritating"

Even serpents shine is a record of complete perfection. I love every track on it. No solution vies with another girl as my favourite OO track: what guitar! "Love is just destruction disguised under another name"

I missed the One return unfortunately. The world deserves to hear Peter Perrett again (and John Perry). Surely a world that rewards dreary plodding Britpop Beatles imitators with millions of sales has room for Peter Perrett''s sublime music.

Keep up the good work

just a reply to mark los re GUNCOURT supporting tht OOs. The gig mark is talking about was @ redcar cotham bowl. Although I was the guitarist in a band called guncourt it was not us who played. It was in fact a band called Dangerbird - I was their manager and yes our guitarist had his sg nicked while we watch in awe as the oos went down a storm - he was insured anyway and when you had the kind of chemical dependancy the oos had to support who would begrudge them a axe - and he got to buy a top telecaster with the insurance payout - better than an sg anyday. Thought i better get the facts right so as not to upset anyone. Mark was right about the one gig in @ the leadmill it was fantastic and a real shame so few turned up. I promise you with a bit more publicity peter could have sold out the place and will do if he chooses to play again. He made an old man v happy. Well mark i hope that clears everything up. I can't believe there is a web-site for our Peter and the OO's - the net is useful for something after all and I only did a search on the off chance.
The stuff on the site has created a few quests though - this new live album thing with The One - is it out yet? Any reviews? Is it any good? Why is it coming out now - is it a prelude to Peter actually like doing some new tunes or anybloody thing this year? Did he have any involvement with putting the album together? Is Peter back on the horse - no offence intended but is he ok? Can any of us help if there is a prob - like administering a kick up the arse or telling him he is one of our most original and interesting songwriters but some more additional recorded proof would be nice?! Can anyone get him to this site so we can have a chat or even better a communal booze up in south London would be nice - beers r on us of course! For example I wanna know where to meet all these fantastically interesting, exotic and downright terrifying sounding women he has always written so eloquently about - come on Pete share will ya!
Peter - I've got a big cup of Peter Perrett lemonade here and I need to drink this shit so can we please have another album - HELLO??
Got to see him with The One back in 94(?) at the Sheffield Leadmill. The gig still makes me chuckle as i will never forget Pete walking through the crowd to get to the stage while the jaws of everybody in the audience fell to the floor in that kind of 'what the hell is that - he looks more battered than Keef?' look. Some seriously nervous looks were exchanged between the (fairly sparse but great size for a barely advertised Sunday evening gig)audience some of whom were about to ask security to remove the tramp off stage ( again no offence but it was a shock to see him!). And then he started to sing and the grins of contentment on our faces were stuck there for about a week afterwards - although Pete it has to be said u looked bloody fed up that nite! Top gig though and great tunes - I only wish I had been able to see the OO's but I was still just about in nappies then - well I was about 6 anyway. So come on then Pete lets have u back out of hibernation and scaring us kids again - purleese........
Oh and the guitarist of a band - Guncourt - who supported u in middlesboro back in the day (77 or 78?) was with me in Sheffield and I'm sure he will come along for this booze up u r now gonna sort out - and his fellow guitarist in the band who he hasn't seen for 20 years will doubtless want his guitar back coz he reckoned one of the OO's nabbed it!!

Take care and good luck with site.......Peace....out Mark

(This was an email following up from some site corrections...Ithought it was great....sierrab..
Dear Steve,

I think this shows clearly that you were probably consuming less than peter
and I were at the time...great memory

When "Planet" came out I was 14 and only just beginning to "consume" (we're
not talking about buying household appliances here, are we? That has come
only VERY recently ). But I too went on to become a fully paid-up member
of the "consumer" society but, like yourself and Peter, I have evidently
come out the other side. So no I DON'T actually have a great memory, there
are some gaping lacunae between 1985 and 1994, but I do have copies of all
the records which had exclusive tracks on and they're pretty good as an
aide-mémoire... It's so much easier to remember things when you don't have
to actually... er... REMEMBER them...

To the best of MY knowledge, this would be a full OO discography, in more or
less chronological order:

Lovers of Today (Vengeance 7" p/s)
Lovers of Today (Vengeance 12" in white cardboard sleeve with sticker of
the - frankly rather terrifying - photo from the 7")
Another Girl Another Planet/Special View (CBS 7" p/s see attached scan of
front)
Another Girl Another Planet/As My Wife Says (CBS 7" p/s - I don't remember
there being a 7" of this but there may have been - see attached scan of
front)
The Only Ones (CBS LP)
You've Got To Pay/This Ain't All (it's made out to be) (CBS 7" p/s see
attached scan of front)
Even Serpents Shine (CBS LP)
Out There In The Night/Lovers Of Today/Peter And The Pets (CBS 12" on blue
[?] vinyl)
Trouble In The World/Your Chosen Life (CBS 7" p/s)
Baby's Got A Gun (CBS LP)
Fools/[can't remember what the 'b' side was, but it was from "Baby" or
I'd've bought it - I have an idea it may have been "Castle Built On Sand"]
(CBS 7")

Then there was the "Remains" album and the "Baby's Got A Gun/Silent Night"
single. All but three tracks from the CBS years are currently available on
CD by buying the reissues of the albums plus the "Immortal Story"
compilation. The three tracks are "As My Wife Says", "This Ain't All" and
the single version of "Trouble In The World" (with gospel girlie backing
vocals). I actually spent this weekend compiling myself a double CD
collection comprising the complete CBS recordings ("Lovers/Pets" got
included by dint of having been on the "Out There" 12" and this was the full
track listing. A boxed set style reissue of the OO full catalogue would only
have to add the stuff from "Remains" and then any "rare" tracks needed to
persuade the likes of me to shell out £30+ for something we've already got
(cynical? Perhaps...):

CD 1: Lovers of Today / Peter and the Pets / Special View / As My Wife Says
/ The Whole of the Law / Another Girl Another Planet / Breaking Down / City
of Fun / The Beast / Creature of Doom / It's the Truth / Language Problem /
No Peace for the Wicked / The Immortal Story / This Ain't All / From Here to
Eternity / Flaming Torch / You've Got to Pay / No Solution / Inbetweens /
Out There in the Night

CD2: Curtains For You / Programme / Someone Who Cares / Miles From Nowhere /
Instrumental / No Solution (remix) / Trouble in the World / Your Chosen Life
/ Oh Lucinda (Love Becomes A Habit) / The Happy Pilgrim / Why Don't You Kill
Yourself/ / Me and My Shadow / Deadly Nightshade / Strange Mouth / My Way
Out of Here / The Big Sleep / Re-Union / Fools / Castle Built On Sand /
Trouble In The World / Baby's Got A Gun / Oh Lucinda (Love Becomes A Habit)
(Martin Hannett remix)

It actually hangs together very well indeed, especially by splitting
"Serpents" at the end of Side One (one thing I miss about vinyl is the
concept of side one and side two). I left the album version of "Trouble"
where it was on the CD reissue rather than reverting to the original running
order with it at track 2 or 3 on Side Two to keep it as far as possible from
the single version. I can't guarantee that I haven't missed something but,
as I say, during the life of the Only Ones I was aged 16 and under and a big
fan (still am, and I thought Peter's comeback album was terrific stuff -
speaking as someone who's woken up sticky a few times himself...) I
certainly always kept my eyes open for OO releases and bought anything that
had new songs/versions on it. My pocket money wouldn't stretch to buying
singles with 'b' sides I already had, though...

Incidentally, if you want any other stuff (I can imagine that Peter may not
have hung on to everything from that period!), such as scans of the inserts
of the first and third albums (I don't think I got one with "Serpents", but
there was a green one with pictures and credits with the first and a sort of
greyish coloured one, again with pics and credits with "Baby") let me know
and I'll scan 'em for you.

Now you have complicated my life....I have got to recode the page
Incidentally I spoke to Pete for the first time in ages last week and he
seems to be talking positively of new stuff to go out via the site but....
let's hope he gets off his arse

Well, sorry for complicating your life - blame the "consumer society" and
curse me for doing my "consuming" a few years later than you - but in case
you want to add some more pictures, I've scanned my copies of the "Planet"
7" and 12" (I only have a flatbed scanner - though quite a good one - so
it's only an A4 scan, but if you wanted to I have in the past managed to
piece together 12" sleeves by doing two scans and playing around in
Photoshop! Let me know...) and the "You've Got To Pay" 7" single. I don't
know what the copyright position on these is but I imagine that if you have
permission (from Peter or whoever does own the copyright) to use the others
then you can use these...). I've scaled the pics down to a resolution of 200
dpi so as not to send you megabytes and megabytes of attachments, but
originally scanned them at 320 and can let you have those if you want.

I kind of lost touch with the music scene in the early nineties as I was
living in Barcelona and it ended up with my "consumerism" getting out of
hand and since then I've not kept as in touch as I used to. I see that there
now seem to be a lot of OO CDs I don't know about. I have the 3 CBS album
reissues, the "Immortal Story" compilation and the Live album, and have a
copy of "Remains" on order (I have vinyl copies of all the CBS albums but
lent my copy of the vinyl "Remains" to someone in the late 80s and never got
it back... Grrr...), but what is actually on all these other albums such as
"Special View", "The Big Sleep", etc.? Are they just compilations of stuff
available elsewhere? I don't have a copy of the Peel Sessions album yet but
hope to track one down soon as I seem to recall that the Peel stuff was
really good. I also had a cassette of a Radio One In Concert broadcast from
about 1978 which was excellent. The main thing I remember about it was that
it had "Oh No" on it (it was known to all and sundry under that name at the
time and I've never really come to think of it as "Flowers Die"!) Is that
out on CD now? I wonder if that cassette has survived... If not I have a
friend who's led a more sedate life than me and he's probably still got a
copy...

Anyway, mustn't ramble on forever. I'm a respectable businessman these days
with my own translation agency! So I'd better do some work. But if you do
need any help with the site please let me know. As I say, although my memory
of the late 80s and early 90s is fairly hazy, I do have some recollection of
the late 70s and early 80s!

Regards (and all the best to Peter - and tell him to get off his arse and
get some more music out there!)

As a Yank who considers as one of the many musical highlights of his brief time here on Earth having been one of a dozen people (if that!) who caught the Only Ones' one AND only Washington DC performance in 1979? 80?, it is most gratifying to find there are others who still carry that flaming torch for our Peter. Great site...and I'd love to hear from any Perrett fans out there with access to Only Ones/The One live tapes, for the purpose of possible trades and such. Cheers!

Peter...PLEEEEASE get off your arse & DO SOMETHING. You can't keep on missing the boat! In 94-96 u were all set to happen. Now with the Net & mpeg the possibilities are endless (i.e., NO record companies - what joy, ay!). BTW pleased about the live 'One' LP - saw u 4x in 94/95 & always preferred Miyuki's key-riff mixed high in 'Jungle'. Fave 3 'One trax? - 'Daughter', 'Company of Strangers', 'Jungle' & 'Shivers'....do i say 3?! All the best for The New Year - MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Becca...dunno if the cultured Palate EP is available...think it's on 'Dwarf' label...try yr local Virgin Store, they'll order it. Also get the live 'One' cd - pretty damn good.
- bye all!

What isn't there a book of Mr Perretts compete lyrics? Is there a song writer alive who writes as well as he? Perhaps he can call it "The Bible" There are many lines that can not be deciphered It is like a puzzle with missing pieces. Help! This book would be a must have for all admirers.
